Graduated in Chemistry

Full Professor of Chemical Foundations of Technologies (Scientific-Disciplinar Sector: CHEM06/A) at the Department of Science and Methods for Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. She graduated in Chemistry from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in 1993 and she received her Ph.D. in Chemical Science in 1997 from the Universities of Parma, Modena and Ferrara (Italy). She holds courses in Chemistry and in Product and Process Sustainability for the degree and master degree courses in Management Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering. Coordinator of several European and national projects, she is author of more than 130 publications in international journals and more than 200 contributions in national and international congresses. Her research activity is mainly focused on the design management of sustainable processes and products. Since 2005, she coordinates LCA Working Group, a research group devoted to the development and application of LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology as a tool for assessing the potential environmental impacts associated with products, processes and services in order to support the decision making processes according to the principles of sustainability. The case studies dealt with many sectors such as construction materials, waste management, agricultural systems and nanotechnologies and were carried out in collaboration with leading research centres in the field of environmental sustainability within the framework of national and international research projects. The latest research activity is aimed at adopting a holistic approach that takes into account not only environmental, but also economic and social issues. The integrated LCM (Life Cycle Management) model, i.e. LCA-LCC-SLC (Life Cycle Assessment – Life Cycle Costing – Social Life Cycle Assessment) allows the sustainability of the systems considered to be assessed.

Graduated in Architecture

She has obtained her B.S. in Architecture in 2006. Her final dissertation, completed at ENEA headquarters in Bologna in collaboration with Ing. Paolo Neri, focuses on energy requalification of housing (social construction). She has applied for the first time LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology to evaluate the impact of the building interventions proposed during the design phase.
She also holds a master degree in “Sustainable Urban Planning” from the IUAV of Venice (Faculty of Architecture). Her master memoir discusses a “Pilot test of a small, wood chip heating system managed by a SME “(conversion of arable land to poplar woods towards the production of woody biomass for energy use).
She has subsequently collaborated to the renovation of the building “Casa Gaia” in Lucerna San Giovanni (TO). She has used the LCA methodology to select the least impactful and more efficient materials and technologies for this pilot project of participatory design that has involved technicians, artisans and construction companies alike.
In 2017, within a project for a recovery plan in Messina, she carried out the LCA analysis of social housing units, with a structure in wood and pressed straw.
Since 2018, she has been collaborating on an ongoing basis with the LCA Working Group.
